"'After September 11, Walker said to friends that she thought she would write no more, wishing instead to become a 'wandering inspiration' ... Perhaps such a desire bears such fruit as Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart."
The desire to poke holes in Walker's self-congratulatory role is an interesting twist at what many often label the end of her career.
But my question is: what's wrong with wanting to be a wandering inspiration?
Yes, it's pompous and silly; yes, self-aggrandizing and bizarrely privileged a role. But also: how does that differ from her desire to represent the black family's internal business? How does it differ from her desire to appropriate Native American stuff for her own spiritual ends?
I am not being clear. But there's something so snide and unnecessary about that sort of dismissal. Perhaps NOTH is a bad book--yes, ok, it definitely is. But I am exactly interested in its badness. As a spiritual allegory--the record of her adventures as a 'wandering inspiration'--this is a different style of writing. She is entering the visionary/shaman/spiritual leader role utterly.
